Mechanics / Solo mat / Build
Sprawl from the standing base
Hips back and down from a standing base, hands to the mat, legs long, then recover.
One movement at a time, with the landmark a coach would call out for each phase.
Phases of this study
- Standing base. Staggered, knees bent, hands in front.
- Hips back, hands down. Hips shoot back as the hands drop toward the mat.
- Hips through the mat. Hips down and through, legs long, weight on the hands and the balls of the feet.
- Recover. Feet back under you.
- Settle the base. Ready for the next.
Common faults
- Folding at the waist
- The chest comes down but the hips stay high.
- Knees touch first
- The athlete drops to the knees instead of throwing the legs back.
- Slow recovery
- The base is rebuilt lazily and the next sprawl starts from a stoop.
Why it matters
Even in a sport that is mostly on the ground, matches start standing and someone will shoot. The sprawl is the hips going back and down before the shot arrives; here it is the shape and the recovery, with no shot to time it on.
Drill prescription
3 rounds of 30 seconds work with 30 seconds rest. Five sprawls per round with a full base recovery between each.
Scope
Solo drill on a mat. No partner, no grips, no weight, no pressure and no resistance are shown. Not coach-verified: a qualified instructor has not reviewed the animation or these notes. There is no shot to sprawl on, so timing and where the hips land on a partner are not shown.
Cues the timer will call
- Hips back first, then down.
- Weight on the hands and the balls of the feet.
- Recover the base before the next one.
Movement notes: Standing base
- Feet apart. Stand in a comfortable staggered base.
- Knees available. Keep enough knee bend to change your level.
- Hands ready. Keep your hands available without reaching past your base.
- Settle. Pause and verify your balance.
Watch for. Not a complete stance for every grappling ruleset.
Movement notes: Sprawl
- Standing base. Start in a staggered standing base with the hands in front.
- Hips back, hands down. Shoot the hips back and drop the hands toward the mat as the chest comes forward.
- Hips through the mat. Drive the hips down and through with the legs long behind you and the weight on the hands and the balls of the feet.
- Recover the base. Bring the feet back under you and recover the standing base.
Watch for. The hips go back and down; bending at the waist with the hips left high is not a sprawl. There is no shot to sprawl on in a solo study, so timing and where the hips land on a partner are coaching questions.
Rehearse, then reflect
Open the visual study to step the phases on the live model. Start slowly using the movement taught by your coach, pause between repetitions and keep the range comfortable. Add the study to a session when you want a timed block, and record one useful observation afterward.
